 Cool Baby Names Baby Names
Wake-Up Call: Mark Sanchez, Drew Brees, Kobe Bryant, Pete Rose vs

Brees' baby boy is due tomorrow. And yes, Brees said he's heard all the names -- "Cool" Brees, "Summer" Brees. "But I still think we can do better," he said. Any thoughts out there?

Run and shoot: Why I like watching Kobe Bryant: He drains a three-pointer with 27.4 seconds left in the game last night against the Houston Rockets. Watching him pull the Lakers out of the fire time after time can be exhilarating. And deflating when he comes up short. Here is a video of the game's highlights.

Hit and run: The question came up here in the Sports department: Whom would you want as your leadoff hitter if you could choose anyone. Two names kept coming up as by far the best -- brand-new Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson and Pete Rose, who probably won't ever be in the Hall of Fame because of his gambling.

District Dining: Two Very Different Takes

The piece explores the emergence of a vibrant restaurant scene in neighborhoods like Columbia Heights, U Street, and H Street NE (just to name a few), profiling restaurants like Cork, Marvin, and Granville Moore's.

We do have our little nitpicks: The description of the upstairs bar of Marvin as having "a cool, P. M. Dawn feeling during the week" is a bit creaky (c'mon, they were on Hit Me Baby One More Time), and Cork's 14th Street location just can't reasonably be seen as having been a gamble only a year ago. But the Times' piece is at least a more thoughtful look at dining out beyond white tablecloth, big budget restaurants and includes actual insight from long-time chefs and restaurateurs like Ann Cashion and Gillian Clark, who have long been part of the community. It explores non-expense account D.C., with a number of planned restaurants in previously under-served neighborhoods, and is a nice departure from the standard lists of places that tend to focus on big names in the more established parts of the city.

Xmas baby is early gift

Suitable for a child born on Christmas, one of his middle names, Nicholas, was the suggestion of Martens' physician, Dr. Brian Welch.

"Dr. Welch just thought it would be cool to have Nicholas somewhere in his name," said Martens.

Because of his early arrival, the tiny infant was flown by helicopter to Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines shortly after his birth, where he will likely remain until his due date, to allow his lungs to develop.

"He already has his first set of flight wings," Kraft said. "The Life Flight crew gave them to him."

The baby is doing well at Blank, breathing and eating on his own. Until Martens is discharged from the hospital on Sunday, his grandmother, Tami White, has been spending time with him in Des Moines.

INTO ETERNITY Mainman Issues Year-End Update - Dec. 31, 2008

"I was personally out of the touring game in mid-September because Cortney and I were expecting a baby. Music has always been number one in my life, but I had to stay home and support the family. On November 28, 2008 Lucca Jacob Yngwie Roth was born into our world at 9:36 a.m. Cortney picked his first name, so I got to pick his middle names. Jacob was my father and Yngwie is my all-time favourite guitar player. The choice of names was an easy one for me. Now all of my time has been dedicated to the family and it will be into the next year as well."

Here are some "cool albums" that Tim Roth has been digging in 2008:

01. YNGWIE MALMSTEEN - Perpetual Flame
02. GUNS N' ROSES - The Chinese Democracy
03. CYNIC - Traced In Air
04. OPETH - Watershed

Finest trade blue uniforms for red suits to deliver gifts for kids

Needy children had written letters to Santa, asking for a toy or help or baby food for a sibling. The cops took down the names from the Post Office and responded.

There were earlier trips this week to East Harlem and the Bronx. The good Samaritan cops were joined by civilian supervisor Karen Ayers.

A toy-packed van carried Santa and his driver. A second police car followed with four cops.

"Due to the economic downturn, what better way to give back than putting a smile on a child's face," said Capt. Cedric Raymond.

They even got 14-year-old Ravindra Dharampaul to believe in Santa after he was brought a computer accessory.

"He writes a letter to Santa every year," mom Lalita explained.

"He says it's cool." she added, eyes watering.
